Screen Printing is an ancient
art for applying images onto a wide range of products, including
T-Shirts & other garments.
Contrary to popular belief, screen printing is infact fairly
easy to master. Ready made screen frames are available (see
example on right), and the screen (fabric with fine mesh) is
stretched tightly over the frame.
To create a screen, the process is simple and straightforward:-
a) Create artwork on a computer (Black artwork on
transparency sheets).
b) Coat screen with Emulsion (Light sensitive coating)
and leave it to dry.
c) Place artwork on top of screen and expose to
bright light for 6-9 minutes.
e) Wash screen under a normal shower head. The image area
washes away
thus allowing the ink to be pushed through on to the garment.
f) Apply ink colour of your choice onto the screen and draw
squeegee towards
you to print.
f) Dry ink on garment under Spot Dryer for about a
minute. Once the ink is dry,
the garment can be worn and washed.
- That is basically Screen Printing!
Screen
Printing Vs Heat Pressed Transfers
Screen printing
compliments heat transfers. However, screen printing becomes
more of a viable option over heat pressed transfers when, say,
you have more than 50+ garments of the same design to print on
to. Screen printing also offers you the opportunity to produce
excellent work with very intricate detail.
With screen
printing, you can also make plastisol transfers for heat
presses.
